Sneha (Oileation)
In Ayurvedic medicine, Sneha, oileation is a foundational practice that prepares your body and mind for deeper healing. Whether as a standalone treatment or as a preliminary step to Panchakarma detoxification, Shirodhara, or Abhyanga massage, oileation works to soften tissues, calm the nervous system, and invite medicinal herbs deep into your cells.
Your Ayurvedic practitioner will choose oils specifically suited to your constitution (Prakriti) and current health needs. The oil is warmed to a soothing temperature, just above body heat, and applied with intention, beginning at the head and moving downward in gentle, circular motions.
Sessions typically last anywhere from thirty minutes to over an hour, depending on your needs. After application, you’ll rest—allowing the oils to fully integrate and their healing effects to unfold. This pause is essential. It’s where the real transformation happens.
Sweda (Sudation)
Swedana, or therapeutic sweating, follows oileation as the next stage of deep healing. Where Sneha softens and nourishes, Swedana opens your channels, releases accumulated toxins, and carries the medicine of the oils deeper into your tissues to purify at every level.
Your Ayurvedic practitioner will customize the heat to your constitution (Prakriti) and current health needs. The warmth—often infused with medicinal steam or herbal preparations—is applied with intention, gently encouraging profuse sweating that purifies without strain. Your body naturally knows what to release when given the right conditions.
Sessions typically last thirty minutes to an hour, depending on your needs. After treatment, you’ll rest in a quiet space, allowing your body to integrate the detoxification and continue its natural healing process. This pause is essential. It’s where the transformation deepens and takes root.
Panchakarma (Detoxification)
Translating to “five actions,” Panchakarma is a comprehensive detoxification and rejuvenation therapy designed to remove deep-rooted toxins and restore balance to your whole system.
Panchakarma builds on the foundation of Sneha and Swedana, combining systematic cleansing with nourishment. Your Ayurvedic practitioner assesses your constitution (Prakriti) and current imbalances, then designs a personalized protocol that may include therapeutic purgation, enemas, nasal cleansing, and blood purification.
Panchakarma retreats typically span seven to fourteen days, allowing time for preparation, treatment, and integration. During this period, you’ll follow a specialized diet, receive daily therapies, and rest deeply as toxins release and your system finds its way back to equilibrium. This pause is essential. It’s the space where genuine transformation becomes possible.
