Rekawa Wellness Resort
Panchakarma Retreats in Sri Lanka
A Doctor-Led Ayurvedic Programme at Rekawa Wellness Resort
Panchakarma is one of the best-known therapeutic approaches within traditional Ayurveda, but it is also one of the most misunderstood.
It is sometimes described simply as an Ayurvedic “detox”. In reality, traditional Panchakarma is more individualised than that. It is not a standard package of treatments that every guest should receive, and it is not something we automatically recommend simply because someone books a wellness retreat.
At Rekawa Wellness Resort in Sri Lanka, Panchakarma begins with a clinical consultation with our Ayurvedic doctor.
Your health history, constitution, current concerns, strength, digestion, lifestyle and suitability for treatment are considered before a programme is recommended. The treatments used, their intensity and the length of the programme can therefore differ considerably from one person to another.
For some guests, the doctor may recommend elements of Panchakarma as part of a wider Ayurvedic programme. For others, a gentler restorative approach may be more appropriate.
The principle is simple:
the programme follows the person, rather than the person following a predetermined programme.

What Is Panchakarma?
Panchakarma is a traditional Ayurvedic therapeutic system involving preparatory, cleansing and restorative practices selected according to the individual.
The Sanskrit term Panchakarma is commonly translated as “five actions” or “five procedures”. Classical Ayurvedic practice describes several principal therapeutic procedures, but this does not mean that a person attending a Panchakarma retreat should automatically undergo all five.
The specific approach depends on an Ayurvedic doctor’s assessment.
Treatment may be preceded by preparatory therapies intended, within the Ayurvedic system, to prepare the body for the main procedures. This can include practices such as oil treatments, massage, herbal preparations, dietary adjustments and therapeutic heat or steam.
At Rekawa, Panchakarma is therefore approached as a clinically supervised Ayurvedic programme rather than a fixed spa treatment menu.

Your Panchakarma Consultation
Every Panchakarma programme at Rekawa begins with a one-to-one consultation with our Ayurvedic doctor.
This is an important part of the programme.
Rather than choosing treatments yourself from a menu, the doctor assesses what may be appropriate for you.
The consultation may include discussion of:
your general health and medical history;
any current health concerns;
medications or supplements you are taking;
digestion and appetite;
bowel habits;
sleep;
energy levels;
stress and emotional wellbeing;
previous Ayurvedic or Panchakarma treatment;
diet and lifestyle;
physical strength and constitution;
your reasons for undertaking the retreat.
Traditional Ayurvedic assessment may also consider your Prakriti — your underlying constitution — and your current pattern of imbalance.
From this assessment, the doctor determines whether Panchakarma is appropriate and, if so, which elements should form part of your programme.
On longer stays, your progress is reviewed during the retreat and the programme can be modified as necessary.
Who May Be Suitable for a Panchakarma Retreat?
People come to Rekawa for many different reasons.
Some are already familiar with Ayurveda and specifically want to experience a traditional Panchakarma programme in Sri Lanka. Others arrive feeling that their normal routine has become unsustainable and want a period of structured rest, simpler food and therapeutic care.
A Panchakarma programme may be considered for people seeking:
a deeper experience of traditional Ayurveda;
a period of structured rest and reflection;
an opportunity to establish healthier daily routines;
personalised Ayurvedic dietary and lifestyle guidance;
a longer therapeutic retreat rather than a short spa break;
time away from demanding work or lifestyle patterns;
an introduction to Ayurvedic practices under professional supervision.

Sneha (Oileation)
In Ayurvedic medicine, Sneha, oileation is a foundational practice that prepares your body and mind for deeper healing. Whether as a standalone treatment or as a preliminary step to Panchakarma detoxification, Shirodhara, or Abhyanga massage, oileation works to soften tissues, calm the nervous system, and invite medicinal herbs deep into your cells.
Your Ayurvedic practitioner will choose oils specifically suited to your constitution (Prakriti) and current health needs. The oil is warmed to a soothing temperature, just above body heat, and applied with intention, beginning at the head and moving downward in gentle, circular motions.
Sessions typically last anywhere from thirty minutes to over an hour, depending on your needs. After application, you’ll rest—allowing the oils to fully integrate and their healing effects to unfold. This pause is essential. It’s where the real transformation happens.
Sweda (Sudation)
Swedana, or therapeutic sweating, follows oileation as the next stage of deep healing. Where Sneha softens and nourishes, Swedana opens your channels, releases accumulated toxins, and carries the medicine of the oils deeper into your tissues to purify at every level.
Your Ayurvedic practitioner will customize the heat to your constitution (Prakriti) and current health needs. The warmth—often infused with medicinal steam or herbal preparations—is applied with intention, gently encouraging profuse sweating that purifies without strain. Your body naturally knows what to release when given the right conditions.
Sessions typically last thirty minutes to an hour, depending on your needs. After treatment, you’ll rest in a quiet space, allowing your body to integrate the detoxification and continue its natural healing process. This pause is essential. It’s where the transformation deepens and takes root.

Panchakarma (Detoxification)
Translating to “five actions,” Panchakarma is a comprehensive detoxification and rejuvenation therapy designed to remove deep-rooted toxins and restore balance to your whole system.
Panchakarma builds on the foundation of Sneha and Swedana, combining systematic cleansing with nourishment. Your Ayurvedic practitioner assesses your constitution (Prakriti) and current imbalances, then designs a personalized protocol that may include therapeutic purgation, enemas, nasal cleansing, and blood purification.
Panchakarma retreats typically span seven to fourteen days, allowing time for preparation, treatment, and integration. During this period, you’ll follow a specialized diet, receive daily therapies, and rest deeply as toxins release and your system finds its way back to equilibrium. This pause is essential. It’s the space where genuine transformation becomes possible.
